Welcome to “This Week In Crazy,” The National Memo‘s weekly update on the wildest attacks, conspiracy theories, and other loony behavior from the increasingly unhinged right wing. Starting with number five:
5: Ann Coulter
Right-wing pundit Ann Coulter celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday this week by going on Fox News and blaming minorities for gun violence.
“I just got back from England, which, they have not bought into this whole diversity enthusiasm,” Coulter said.
“If you compare white populations, we have the same murder rate as Belgium,” she continued. “So perhaps it’s not a gun problem, it is a demographic problem, which liberals are the ones pushing, pushing, pushing.”
Thankfully, Coulter chose not to propose a solution (final or otherwise) to America’s supposed “demographic problem.”
4: Rand Paul

Kentucky senator Rand Paul once again proved that crazy conspiracy theories run in the family when he warned America that Obamacare is collecting information on gun owners for “government databanks.”
“He’s going to use Obamacare apparently to have doctors informing on their patients to whether or not they have guns,” Paul said in an interview with hate group leader Tony Perkins.
“I’m very much opposed to this kind of information going into government databanks because I fear that the time will come when this data will be misused,” he added.
Of course, Paul neglected to mention that the National Rifle Association — which endorsed Paul’s 2010 Senate campaign — has a “databank” of over four million gun owners (in the form of its membership list.)
3: Erik Rush:
According to World Net Daily columnist Erik Rush — who claims to be “the first to give national attention to the story of Sen. Barack Obama’s ties to militant Chicago preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright, initiating a media feeding frenzy” — President Obama is selling out America. Literally!
Rush’s sources — who are totally real and not at all made up — reveal that “President Obama had a mid-level U.S. official meet with a Chinese officer in 2011 to find out if the Chinese were open to a land and resource swap for debt forgiveness.” As a result of this plan, which was thought up by Valerie Jarrett and China’s Politburo Standing Committee, the “long-standing goals of Jarrett, Obama, David Axelrod and a host of communist Obama cronies to bring America under communist sway will finally come to fruition.”
Rush also has an answer for the dozens of people who were wondering why President Obama pushed for gun control after the Sandy Hook shooting: “It is the Chinese who are pushing for the disarming of the American populace.” Just like Alex Jones warned us!
2: Glenn Beck

Apparently bored with his right-wing media empire, last Friday Beck revealed his plans to build a $2 billion community based on “Galt’s Gulch,” the fictional hideaway where Ayn Rand’s character brought the productive members of society in Atlas Shrugged.
According to Beck, the community — called Independence Park — will be completely self-sustaining, with its own food, energy, and entertainment, along with a theme park and residential community. Independence Park will also have a “national archive” where children will be “deprogrammed” and elected officials will be taught “the truth”; this archive will be housed in the center of a giant lake that is larger than Disney Land.
As Kyle Manyla writes at Right Wing Watch, “There is no way to even try to summarize the delusional insanity of Beck’s 20-minute description of his vision” — so do yourself a favor and go there to watch the entire thing.
1: Michele Bachmann

It wouldn’t be “This Week In Crazy” without an appearance from the chairwoman of the House GOP’s Crazy Caucus, Minnesota representative Michele Bachmann.
Bachmann’s entry comes from the 2012 campaign, but was only reported this week by Buzzfeed‘s Andrew Kaczysnki. According to the report, the congresswoman’s “high-profile debate coach, Brett O’Donnell, developed an ‘unnatural’ and ‘Rasputin-like’ relationship with his candidate during her failed 2012 presidential campaign.”
Peter Waldron — a former Bachmann campaign aide who was charged with terrorism in Uganda in 2006 — claims that O’Donnell told Bachmann when she could get on and off the campaign bus, prohibited her husband from sleeping in the same room as her during the campaign, and that Bachmann “appeared to even be fearful of O’Donnell.”
Waldron says “By the end, she was broken emotionally, mentally, and slept in her private cabin in the back of the bus. I do not know if she has ever recovered.” Judging by her deranged actions since the campaign, it’s a safe bet that she hasn’t.
